Create a Training

You have been contacted by an individual, group, or municipality about doing training on the ADA and/or including people with disabilities. Now what?

Use the process outlined below. The Client Conversation Guide, Module Summaries, TLN Curriculum Modules, and Training Proposal Template will be helpful tools as you go through these steps.

Step-by-Step Process

Step 1: Converse with the client about training needs, goals, and logistics.

The Client Conversation Guide includes key questions you will want to ask.

Step 2: Identify specific modules from the TLN Curriculum that will address the goals of the training.

  1. Review the TLN Curriculum Modules and the Module Summaries (PDF) to narrow your selection.
  2. Look through the Facilitator Guide for each module you are considering.
  3. Finalize your choices, keeping in mind the intent of the training, audience, and time allotted for the session.

Step 3: Draft a Training Proposal for the client’s review.

The Training Proposal Template indicates key information for your proposal. Reviewing it with the client is another chance to clarify expectations before making final decisions about the training session.

Step 4: Identify any additional resources you need and request them.

Do have questions about the information in the Facilitator Guides for the modules you plan to use? Do you need information about State or local laws that may be helpful to your audience? Would you like fact sheets or other materials from your ADA Center to share with the group? If so, reach out to your TLN Coordinator as soon as possible. You can also contact the ADA Technical Assistance Line at 1-800-949-4232.

Step 5: Do the training.

  • Remember to use a TLN Sign-In Sheet at all of your trainings. The information on the sign-in sheet will help you complete the TLN Training Report Form, after the session. It also provides a way for you to reach out to attendees in the future to find out if they have additional training needs.

Step 6: Enter your training report.

  • Submit your TLN Training Report here to tell us about your session. Don’t forget to include any evidence that attendees learned something new and/or indicated that they would be doing something different because of the training. These “impact stories” are critical to demonstrating the value of the TLN program.

Your regional TLN Coordinator may have additional suggestions and/or expectations for your doing and reporting trainings. Keep in touch!
